Tiredness: 5 factors that can cause physical and mental fatigue

Excessive tiredness vs. normal tiredness

The severity of this feeling of tiredness and fatigue can and should be assessed by a scale of signs, as a night of poor sleep, hours of traffic in the big capitals or even living in an eternal state of tension and stress can suck your energy.

However, other factors can and should be considered, such as clinical imbalances resulting from nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, infections and autoimmune diseases.

Hormonal imbalances

The hormonal decline can occur in both sexes, being a more prevalent factor for women in the period close to the climacteric, and between 50 and 60 years for men. The hormonal decline is physiological and not a disease, but when the fall is severe, it can generate unpleasant symptoms, among them the feeling of fatigue and tiredness.

Defining the causes of fatigue and tiredness is extremely important, and this must be done through a careful medical evaluation.

One of the hypotheses studied associates the feeling of permanent tiredness with a decrease in the activity of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, indicating that the hormonal decline may be directly linked to the lack of energy and the feeling of fatigue.

In this case, hormonal replacement is indicated to rebalance the correct functioning of the central nervous system.


Many diseases today are caused by food imbalances. This is the case with the development of iron deficiency anemia, a situation very associated with a loss of energy and physical disposition – which results in excessive tiredness.

This is because iron is an essential nutrient for the body, responsible for the production of red blood cells and oxygen transport.

An iron deficiency arises mainly from nutritional deficiencies, intestinal infections, menstruation with very intense blood flow and during pregnancy – but anyone can develop anemia if they do not receive the correct dietary intake or have problems with absorption.

Vitamin D deficit

Research shows that low dosage of vitamin D in the blood is one of the probable causes of excessive tiredness and feelings of discouragement.

Exposing yourself more to the sun, but without exaggeration, and increasing your intake of foods rich in vitamin D, such as sardines, is one of the strategies to combat tiredness.

Stress and anxiety

Anxiety and stress are undoubtedly evils of modern life, and the most frequent complaint is to wake up tired.

This is because stress releases high amounts of cortisol and adrenaline, hormones that in high doses impair the functioning of neurotransmitters, leaving individuals anxious, with difficulty concentrating and falling asleep.

The extreme lack of energy and desire is one of the main symptoms of the disease, which also includes a drop in concentration, changes in appetite and sleep and constant negative thoughts.
